R88 Disc Review: The Pinnacle of Performance, Durability and Value

I've been running a set of Light Bicycle 88mm deep carbon wheels with the HD+ layup on my State Black Label V3 (58cm) fixed gear build. I'm 275–297 lbs, and I ride primarily on flat, open roads with an aggressive position and high-torque efforts. My build includes a full ENVE cockpit, Sugino Zen 47T chainring, and Chris King hubs and components, so I wanted a wheelset that could handle both the performance demands and my size. Performance: These wheels are seriously stiff. I can put down big power without worrying about flex or loss of energy. The 88mm depth paired with 29mm ENVE SES tubeless tires makes for a rocketship on flat roads, especially in tailwinds or high-speed tempo efforts. Despite the aero depth, crosswind handling is very manageable thanks to the rim profile. Durability: Even at my weight, the HD+ layup holds strong. I've ridden these hard, and they remain true. Spokes are oil slick single butted, and the build quality (done with brass DT nipples) has kept things solid without needing re-truing. Value: Honestly, you're getting close to Zipp-level performance for a fraction of the cost. LB rims punch way above their price point. Riding Style & Use Case: I'm using these for high-speed fixed gear rides — long country roads, no braking, just pure cadence and torque. They're not designed for crits or tricks, but if you're looking for top-end speed and power transfer, they shine.
