The best way to start a journey is with fun and joy and some outstanding equipment.
The past few years I invested more and more in cycling as I realized what’s important to me in order to have the highest satisfaction on cycling. I started with a Focus Mares cyclocross bike and Shimano wheels for my road biking and finally ended with my current setup of a fully aerodynamically optimized Specialized Venge S-Works with Lightbicycle WR40 DISC wheels. High-class equipment gives the confidence that the rider can’t blame it on the equipment anymore and is fully in control of acceleration and speed, which increases the motivation on every ride even more.
The carbon wheelset is fully configurable, so I designed an all-black set which I got with the black nipples and DT Swiss 180 hubs and black CX-Ray spokes. I especially liked the fast communication during the purchase process and the various payment methods as I paid via WeChat Pay.
As I intend to use the rims for road cycling with aerodynamic optimization for 28mm tires, I chose the Flyweight version. The initial GP5000 tires were made for hooked rims, so no reason to go hookless for me. As for the hubs, the DT Swiss 180 has been chosen as I wanted to have the best of the best and the interchangeability of existing DT Swiss 180 wheels with the same hub, disc and cassette configuration. Sapim CX-Ray spokes are proven in practice and therefore a good choice.
One outstanding advantage of Light Bicycle is that you can see the progress of your wheelset throughout the production line, which gives a very good indication about the total lead time. I chose prepaid tax delivery and it worked perfectly. I could see the transit with a tracking number.
The wheels and the Specialized Venge provide a unique riding experience.
The hooked WR40 Flyweight wheels with 25mm inner width provide the perfect aero foundation for conventional 28mm GP5000 tires. The tire has a width of 29.54mm which means the outer rim width of 32mm is aerodynamically perfectly optimized. No need to purchase the more expensive GP5000 TR S tires as hookless rims require.
I especially like the straightforward willingness of the bike which doesn't care about any kind of side winds. Vienna has a lot of wind which makes this depth (40mm) and the X-Flow design the perfect choice even for a pure aerodynamic bike like the Venge.
The wheelset and Specialized Venge provides a unique riding experience to enjoy the beauty of Austria combined with Chinese quality (Win-Win of Joy).
The bike feels very lively especially thanks to the lowest weight specification possible. The Flyweight version is so easy to accelerate and I choose MT800 Discs to reduce the weight even more. I really like the possibility to cycle with a 11-34 cassette on the Dura-Ace derailleur as it usually can take only cassettes up to 11-30. This upgrade combined with the Flyweight build provides an extremely easy acceleration around the Vienna mountains.
Every journey is memorable with this bike and wheelset.
It’s a holistic journey to happiness. Join the memorable journeys throughout Vienna forest (Sulz, Breitenfurt, Hochroterd) and Vineyards (Gumpoldskirchen, Guntramsdorf) and much much more to be uploaded on my YouTube channel, let’s enjoy these memorable journeys together: Light Bicycle WR40 - YouTube.
