Meaghan Hackinen's Journey to The Mountain Races
Ultra-endurance cyclist, bikepack racer, and Light Bicycle athlete Meaghan Hackinen is swinging big in her goals this year. In the current landscape of bikepack racing, there is arguably no bigger challenge than the Mountain Race Series. But she’s not just lining up to compete: Meaghan aims to be the first woman to complete all three Mountain Races in one year, placing as high as possible in each while she’s at it.

Founded by Nelson Trees, the Mountain Races inspire awe and a little healthy fear, even among experienced riders. Meaghan's season opened in February with the Atlas Mountain Race in Morocco. In May, she took on the formidable Hellenic Mountain Race in Greece, finishing 1st among women and 9th overall. Now she’s back home in Kelowna, training for the Series finale: the Silk Road Mountain Race in Kyrgyzstan. At over 1,900km of extremely remote, high-elevation terrain, it’s arguably the most intimidating in the Series.

Many riders see even just one Mountain Race as the challenge of a lifetime and a peak cycling experience, where finishing alone is a “win”. For Meaghan, they’re a stage to showcase her world-class skills. With results like a record-setting time at the 2024 Tour Divide and other overall wins, she’s now impossible to ignore as a race favourite, wherever she lines up.

Meaghan’s drive is clear; she thrives on big challenges, extracts joy from digging deep, and has earned the deep respect of her peers. In chasing this ambitious goal, she’s not just racing for the podium; she’s shaping what’s possible for women in bikepacking, present and future.
