I’ve ridden these rims for a couple of months now, and hopefully this user feedback is useful to other riders.
I’m fresh back from a Saturday morning trail ride, and I will share my experience with my new AM930S wheels from Light Bicycle. The AM930S is a new model with a stepped-rim design. I’ve ridden these rims for a couple of months now, and hopefully this user feedback is useful to other riders who might be looking at this new option.
I got the AM930S wheels to complete my dream trail bike. My bike is a custom build with a Yeti SB 130 frame, Pike Ultimate fork, and Light Bicycle AM930S wheels. My local bike shop had long waits for complete bikes, so this custom build was my solution. I still had to wait many months for the frame, fork, and other components to arrive, so I had plenty of time to research the perfect wheels to complete the build.
I chose the AM930S wheels because of the innovative stepped-rim design. I got some of the first ones out the door, with the “standard” weight option and 32 hole spokes, which were the only options available at the time. Light Bicycle built up these rims with DT Swiss 240 boost hubs and Sapim CX Ray J-bend spokes. I was aiming for strength and reliability, more than featherweight gram shaving, and the wheels still came in at less than 1550 grams.
So how do the AM930S wheels ride? Honestly, they’ve been amazing.
I live in Rochester, New York, and do most of my riding around the Finger Lakes region in Upstate New York. My rides are all singletrack through forested terrain. It’s a hilly country here with lots of short climbs, drops, and obstacles. Roots and rocks galore.
The AM930S rims have been perfectly suited for this style of trail riding. The wheels have been bullet-proof strong and are running perfectly true after some pretty aggressive trail riding.
Now that I’m on a proper trail bike with bigger suspension and longer, slacker geometry, I’ve been pushing my riding to more technical terrain with faster descents, bigger drops, more air, etc. The new bike is confidence inspiring, and the new wheels are a big part of that. They feel very stable and planted. But they are also surprisingly comfortable and forgiving. Also, I’ve never burped air on my tubeless setup or otherwise flatted out on a ride. That’s how I’d sum up the ride quality – planted, comfortable, and confidence inspiring.
No doubt several factors contribute to the ride quality - the suspension setup, tires, air pressure, etc. I love my Yeti SB130 frame and Pike fork, yet I’m confident that my new AM930S wheels are a big part of the equation. Light Bicycle says the new stepped rims have greater vertical compliance. I’m not an engineer, but the logic of the new stepped design makes sense to me. (Plus they just look cool.) And the ride speaks for itself.
I would definitely recommend the AM930S rims for any aggressive trail rider.
Would I change anything if I bought them again? The rims are so strong, so I bet the new Flyweight and 28h options could work for many riders who want a ridiculously light wheelset. Also, I got the stealth, glossy black Light Bicycle decal. Now I kind of wish I’d gotten the glossy silver decal to match my Pike fork. Details. Details.
A final note on the buying experience. Light Bicycle was great to work with. The sales team was hugely helpful in designing my wheels. They had strong technical knowledge and helpful tips on build options. They even took a few of my technical questions to the engineering team for answers. After I ordered the wheels, they gave me regular updates on the production timelines and shipping, which was so much appreciated because I knew they were navigating supply chain and shipping challenges during the pandemic like everyone else.
A big thumbs up on these wheels. Have fun out there.
