Three years ago, I quit my job to travel in a camper with two bikes.

I’m Phil, 46 years old, and I love riding my bike. Mostly on the road, but more and more I am also addicted to gravel rides. I live in the Black Forest in Germany, so climbing mountains is what I grew up with. I ride mountains wherever and whenever there’s a possibility. Three years ago I quit my job to travel in a camper with two bikes for a whole year. I loved that experience - just stopping wherever it looked interesting and riding to explore the landscape.

I lived the life of a ‘cycling groupie’.

I started my tour in Belgium to watch the classics season of the pro cyclists. What an experience. Riding my bike on the same roads the other days the pros rode in races, I lived the life of a “cycling groupie”: traveling from race to race, riding my bike, watching the big guys in De Ronde, Paris-Roubaix, Amstel Gold Race, etc, but also the smaller races on Wednesdays like Scheldeprijs and Brabantse Pijl. Belgium is crazy for cycling – what an atmosphere during that classics season!

Afterward I headed through Europe to be right at the start of the Giro in Bergamo. It was a great race, but that year the weather was bad, so I went south to prepare for a one-week stage race, the Carinthia Tour in Austria. Great racing week with some good friends and the possibility to ride in Slovenia and Croatia afterwards. Amazing landscape everywhere and the tension got raised to be back at the Tour de France in July, as I always do with some friends.

Have you ever been there? If not, go for it. It’s crazy! Mountain top finish in L’Alpe d’Huez? Galibier? Col de la Madeleine? Crazy atmosphere within thousands of cycling addicts. Outstanding experience!

There’s no comparison to experiencing the world on two wheels with no engine.

I could go on and on, telling so many amazing stories and places. There’s always a nice spot to discover on a bike! And for me, there’s no comparison to experiencing the world on two wheels with no engine. For me it’s the purest way of traveling long distances without extra power than just two legs. Love it.

And thanks a lot to you ‘Light Bicycle’ guys for making this possible with your gorgeous wheelsets. I really love their performance, so you are always a part of this special love for cycling and the world. Thanks!
