I was especially impressed with the paintless external wall of the rim.
I have heard a lot of positive reviews about Light Bicycle wheels from my cyclist friends, but what really got me to make the purchase was witnessing at a shop - compared to another American branded carbon wheel - how well the Falcon Pro was made, both in the exterior surface and internal rim bed.
I was especially impressed with the external wall of the rim - finished in a high gloss surface, such that you could see the homogeneous carbon weaves beneath the laminate. When out riding in the day, it looks spectacular when the glossy surface reflects against the sunlight.
When going up steep climbs, the wheels retain their stiffness and rigidity so that no pedal effort is wasted.
Pairing the Falcon Pro AR35 (flyweight) with the Carbon-Ti Hubs, you get a 35mm deep wheelset weighing a respectable 1.26kg. Upon fitting on the wheels, I could immediately feel the instant acceleration when stepping on the pedals. When out on the saddle going up steep climbs, the wheels retain their stiffness and rigidity so that no pedal effort is ever wasted. Overall, I’m pleased to say that going uphills takes considerably less effort, especially when you are gunning for a PR on a Strava uphill segment.
For the tires, I chose the Continental GP5000 STR in 28mm width, when fitted on the AR35, the tire sidewalls sit flushed with the rim sidewalls, so that it’s not just aesthetically pleasing, but also gains that bit of aero advantage. Also, because the rim walls are hooked, (considering that many brands are going hookless) I will not have to worry about choosing a different brand of tyres in the future.
On wide open roads, I find myself often going at high speed, yet with such a planted feeling against crosswinds.
When accelerating on flats or winding down slopes, the wheels retain their stiffness, yet with the right amount of compliance to soak up any irregular road surfaces. On wide open roads, I find myself often going at high speed, yet with such a planted feeling to the roads and stability against crosswinds, that never once I have felt any loss of confidence.
So far I have ridden over 3500km on this set of wheels, including the pleasure of taking the bike overseas to ride in Malaysia and in Indonesia. Packing the lightweight wheels into a bike box for overseas travel was also a breeze and I won’t need to worry about exceeding the luggage limit.
To date, I own 2 sets of Falcon Pros (AR35 and
AR45) and am awaiting my third set of ultra-lightweight
AR25 to arrive. To anyone choosing a set of carbon wheels, with the flexibility of customising the hubs and spokes, I will definitely not hesitate to recommend the Falcon Pros!
