Raymond : This weekend I took the new Light Bicycle AIRIA 32 wheels for their first big mountain ride: 135km and 3300m over the Col de Colombiere, Col de la Croix Fry, Plateau des Glieres, and Col des Fleuries. In comparison to my ENVE 3.4 with Carbon Ti hubs, the LB AIRIA wheels are approximately 200g lighter and wider (21mm vs 23.5mm internal). The wider rim allows 28mm GP5000 clinchers to stretch to 29.85mm. I can drop my pressure by 5psi on the LB wheels so they certainly feel more comfortable on rough roads. I also feel it’s more planted around corners compared to my ENVE setup, but that might be down to the difference in tires (Veloflex Corsa EVO vs GP5000). In my experience, the GP5000 grip is another level. The DT Swiss 240 EXP (36T) hubs on the ARIAs are very quiet compared to my Carbon Ti hubs. I have friends with the same hubs and they are much louder so I guess mine will break in over time. For now at low speeds, they’re almost silent and become louder when freewheeling at higher speed. I love that the Alpina Hyperlite spokes do not touch in the rear wheel as this eliminates any possibility of noise from spoke rub. This was my gripe with older DT Swiss hub geometry. During some parts of the ride, the crosswind and head wind was very strong. At first, I found myself bracing for the crosswinds since I was used to getting blown around when riding my ENVE wheels. Then I soon realized that how stable the LB ARIA wheels were and were more confidence-inspiring, especially when descending. This is likely due to the wider profile and shallower depth (32mm vs 38/40mm). Finally, the finish of the wheels is immaculate. The carbon rim is uniform and the semi-gloss finish looks high quality. I find the finish on the ENVE’s slightly worse with the white (resin?) lines not the most visually appealing – they’re a bit more ‘raw’. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the wheelset. It’s nice to be back on a lower profile wheel on my Specialized Aethos. They suit the bike and my typical rides very well as the LB wheels are built for climbing.
