My AM930S wheelset with its low profile wave design is looking fancy.

Like all my wheelsets, the new one has been built by Pancho Wheels in Bad Goisern/ Lake Hallstatt. The guys are artists and know me and my riding best. For the AM930S, they took hubs (240s), spokes (Competition Pro, j-bend), and nipples (standard alloy black) from DT Swiss. Due to the fact that the AM930S is a totally new rim design, I had chosen the 32h classic version.

Originally I had wanted the AM930S wheelset for my new do-it-all-hardtail. But due to delivery problems with the frame, the new wheelset is on my enduro bike now. The AM930S wheels would replace my RM29C07 wheelset, which I rode on different enduro bikes for four years and is true like on the first day. Big shoes to fill!

Some specs you may be interested in: wheels weight: 1530g; riders weight: 65kg; tires: Maxxis Dissector Exo+, 1,4bar/1,6bar, tubeless, no tire inserts.

Schladming is one of the best places for a Mountainbiker to live.

The mountains are up to 3.000m and there are lots of good trails in the region. We have two bike parks (Planai and Reiteralm) and now, at the beginning of the summer season, Schladming hosts many well-known pro teams for test and training reasons.

At 8.30 am I took the van for a few kilometers to Planai Bike Park because I had the enduro and the downhill bikes with me. I wanted to make some downhill rides first. I use a set of RM29C07 on downhill too - no problems in three years.

After some runs with the downhiller, I changed the bike and helmet for the first ride with the enduro bike. Firstly with the RM29C07 wheels, then the AM930S. It was sunny (20°C) and still slightly wet from a thunderstorm in the night. I had intended to ride one of my favorite trails, a less known yet very demanding enduro trail, intermediate speed, mainly root mats with some rocks. 700m drop, about 10-min ride time in dry.

The steering precision is very high with the AM930S wheels, yet the vertical damping is slightly better than the RM29C07.

On the first ride the Planai gondola took me up to the mountain top. After some minutes I arrived at the trailhead. Root mats and rocks were wet so I couldn't go as fast as I normally do but I tried to make a precise and repeatable run. Maxxis Dissectors are good tires when it's dry, yet Assegais or even DHRs would have been the better choice for these slightly slippery conditions. But just from the Dissectors, I have two sets... In the end, my run was about two minutes slower than usual in dry conditions. Nevertheless, at the lower speeds, I felt a light wrist and arm fatigue at the end of the first run. I rode back to the van for a short break, then I changed wheels and started again. Now with the AM930S.

The second ride - At first I did not notice any difference from my first run. I tried to ride the same line at the same speed like before and it felt quite similar in steering and shocks. But at the trail end, I had a little bit less wrist and arm fatigue and was 20 seconds faster. Mission accomplished. I rode back down to the valley, put my bike in the car, and went for a coffee.

To summarize, the steering precision is very high with the AM930S wheels, comparable with the RM29C07. And the vertical damping on the other hand is slightly better. Altogether a great compromise in precision and comfort. Summa summarum, I would rate the AM930S even better than the RM29C07, which will make it my new favorite rim and one of the best carbon rims on the market in my opinion.

What’s next? It would be interesting to test the flyweight version of the AM930S on my new hardtail.

Best wishes from Schladming in the heart of Austria.
