Bike:
I built this bike for rough gravel rides and long endurance mountain bike races. I've done four
120-160km races on it so far this year, and it’s performed exactly how I want. I was running the fast
rolling Peyote tires front and rear, but switched to a heavier casing, narrower rear tire with a touch
more climbing traction and opted for the Continental Race King as it's a proven, high-speed rolling
tire. I appreciate the different hand positions the inner bar ends provide for these longer races, and
they offer better aerodynamics for gravel racing. I also find myself grabbing them on steep climbs to
get some leverage.
Wheelset:
I've had these hubs for years and decided it would be a fun project to give them some new life with
fresh bearings and a new look by stripping and polishing them. They were rebuilt onto the new Helios
XC930 rims, which weigh less than 250g a piece, and gave me a wheelset that flies, weighing just 900
grams! In “gravel-mode” the complete, full-suspension bike weighs just 20 pounds and can compete well
against gravel bikes with zero suspension. To do this, I just change to a 38t chainring and consider a
straight post (depending on the course) and, voila: gravel bike.
