What Does the UCI-Approval Mean?
The Union Cycliste Internationale is the world governing body in cycling sports, establishing a set of
regulations for cyclists and the equipment used to protect fair play and safety during competition.
The UCI issues certificates to wheel models that meet the criteria in Article 1.3.018 and authorizes
their use in UCI-sanctioned road and cyclocross events. Light Bicycle's UCI-approved wheels are now
included in the list
of UCI-approved wheels (see Page 48). Unlike bicycle frames, UCI labels are not
affixed to the rims themselves per their guidelines.
Can I Use Uncertified Wheels to Race?
As long as you follow the intended use of our rims, you can certainly race on our non-UCI-certified
rims. If the race you are entering requires UCI-approved rims, then you should only choose those models
that are UCI-certified.
With cycling safety always in mind, we have developed products beyond industry standards. We conduct
comprehensive rim and wheel tests to
guarantee the capability of our products for their intended use.
Impact resistance test:
The impact energy required by the UCI is 40 Joules (J), after which the wheel must remain intact and
usable (i.e, no cracks & lateral/radial run-outs within 0.5mm). At Light Bicycle, we raise the minimum
level to 87J, and the ultimate impact our wheel can endure is well over 100J.
