I was to give the new Light Bicycle wheels a real try, by beating the heat and taking a 10-15 mile ride through the pines.

It was July 30th, 2022, and it was going to be extremely hot in Boise, Idaho. A few of my friends asked if I wanted to finally get out and go try the new Light Bicycle wheels I had just finished building up. Their suggestion was to give them a real try, by beating the heat and taking a 10-15 mile ride through the pines on some rugged single-track up by Shafer Butte. I had to admit, I was a bit skeptical about taking a new wheelset so far off the beaten path.

My Light Bicycle EN932 29-inch carbon hoops were built up using Sapim CX Ray bladed spokes, with a Project 321 Lefty Hub up front and a Tune hub in the rear. I was running new Maxxis Tires front and rear.

I have not been on a 29’er in a while. In the past, I have ridden on 27.5” enduro-style wheels because I liked how stiff and maneuverable my bike felt. The bike I ride can accommodate any wheel size. I was coming up from 24” carbon wheels on my fatty full-suspension to an aggressive 29” wheel, in hopes that climbing would be more efficient, and I could still get aggressive in the downhill runs. These wheels did NOT disappoint.

As soon as I dropped in and hit the dirt, I could feel just how stiff and staunch these wheels felt.

We met in a parking lot at the bottom of Bogus Basin Road, and my three friends and I shuttled up the road 12 miles. From there, we rode our bikes approximately 3 miles from where we parked up to the trailhead to drop in.

We started on the Eastside Trail. This trailhead was right off the main road that leads to Bogus Basin Ski Resort and is at about 7,000 feet elevation. This trail is a relatively new trail that the Bureau of Land Management recently cut in. It was a narrow and woodsy trail, lined with large pine trees on both sides. It was now cool in the shade, as the trees towered above me. As soon as I dropped in and hit the dirt, I could feel just how stiff and staunch these wheels felt. It was quite amazing because these wheels felt so light when putting them on my bike. I was getting the best of both worlds. I had a very light, yet very stable and solid rim set. There was no flex. In fact, I thought at one point in the first 5 minutes that my tires must be too inflated. These rims were rolling fast and taking me out of the turns exactly where I wanted to go.

Being that these were new wheels and a new trail to me, I started out very cautiously.

Being that these were new wheels and a new trail to me, I started out very cautiously. As my confidence grew, I started to push the limits more and more. Pretty soon I was riding through the dust from my buddy in front of me with reckless abandon. I was hitting rocks, roots, and the lines taken from riders before me. We descended for several minutes, gaining more and more speed through the trees.

We crossed a couple of creeks along the way and then climbed out of valley after valley. Eventually, we made it back to Stack Rock Trail where we climbed back out to the road. These rims did not disappoint!

I could not be happier with my Light Bicycle wheels. One of my friends was so impressed with my wheels that he’s planning to purchase some for his bike as well. I researched a lot for new rims when I decided to build up a new wheelset back then. I know now that I definitely made the correct decision in buying the Light Bicycle EN932’s!
